Hi, it’s Job-seeking Katey.
It all began with a story. A story of Chippy the Chipmunk as told by my mom during my attempt to put off bedtime for a few more minutes. “Tell me a story,” I would say and I’d fall asleep listening to the tales of the rambunctious chipmunk. I like to think that my love for stories and storytelling came from these bedtime stories.
Fast forward to my college years. Like many others, I had a hard time picturing how I wanted my life to be in the years to come. After taking some time off, I realized it was silly to not follow my heart or more so my imagination. I switched my major to Creative Writing and never looked back.
Post college, I found myself in the most uncreative fields one could fall into - the mortgage industry. My role was that of a Product Development Analyst and I loved it. It allowed me to use my degree even though the writing was more technical than creative. It was there that I met my husband although we never actually talked until after he left the company.
I loved my job, but was ready to find a more creative role. Writing has always been a passion of mine, so when the opportunity arose for me to take a stab at blogging, you can bet I took it. It was blogging that showed me the creative industry is where I belong.
A few years later, in March of 2022, I took another leap and became a Social Media Manager and Content Creator for a hair salon and boutique in my now husband’s hometown. Two months later, I added my second client, and then my third, and fourth, and fifth, and soon enough I became a self-employed Social Media Consultant. It was everything, until it wasn’t.
Which brings us to today. It is a cold and rainy Sunday in December and I just received my tenth generic job rejection email of the week. The crappy weather is fitting my crappier mood. For the past month, I have been job hunting for a full-time position due to my once full client list dwindling to two.
The job market is a hostile place for someone like myself who has a lot of experience, but not 5-10 years worth. I can match my resume and cover letter to the job description and meet all the minimum qualifications, and yet I still cannot get even a phone interview.
To help try and fill my time, I have started into the world of content creation for myself. I figured if I can do it for businesses, why not apply the same for myself? Maybe I could become an influencer or maybe it could help me meet the company of my dreams. Regardless of what happens, it’s filling a void that the job market has left open.
If you are a prospective employer or are looking for a dedicated Social Media expert, then I am glad you’ve read this far. I created this website as yet another platform to show what I can do. It’s my hope that from here, I can network and secure a dream job.
If you’ve read this far, I hope you reach out and say hi. I am a wordsmith, but my personality shines in person.
XOXO,
Katey
